Physiological importance:
Nicotinic acid/nicotinamide are examples of constituents of the hydrogen-transferring coenzymes NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) and NADP (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate) and are thus involved in numerous metabolic reactions for the synthesis and breaking down of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. In the case of nicotinic acid deficiency, disorders occur in the course of glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, the respiratory chain and various synthetic processes such as the synthesis of fat.
