Scientific opinion on Natugrain® TS

Safety and efficacy of Natugrain TS (endo-1,4-ß-xylanase and endo-1,4-ß-glucanase) as a feed additive for piglets (weaned), chickens for fattening, laying hens, turkeys for fattening and ducks.

On December 17, 2008, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published the scientific opinion of the Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal feed (FEEDAP) and the Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) on Natugrain TS for the use in piglets (weaned), chickens and turkeys for fattening, laying hens and ducks for the category zootechnical additive. The BASF feed additive Natugrain TS contains a combination of thermostable 1,4-ß-xylanase and 1,4-ß-glucanase and is produced in a solid (Natugrain TS) and liquid formulation (Natugrain TS L).

The efficacy of Natugrain TS and Natugrain TS L has been demonstrated at the minimum dose proposed in chickens for fattening, laying hens, turkeys for fattening and piglets.

The proposed minimum doses are:

  • Broilers: 50 g/t
  • Ducks for fattening: 50 g/t
  • Laying hens: 100 g/t
  • Turkeys for fattening: 100 g/t
  • Piglets: 100 g/t

Based on the tolerance studies provided by BASF SE, Natugrain TS and Natugrain TS L are considered to be safe for the target species at the respective maximum proposed doses. Considering the lack of mutagenicity in two assays and the absence of any relevant effects in a 90-day study, it is concluded that the use of Natugrain TS as an additive in animal feed would pose no risk for the consumer.

The summary of the scientific opinion of the FEEDAP is published by EFSA:
